Q: What is the difference between 1018 and A36 plate?

A: A36 has a higher strength, where 1018 is more ductile which means it can be bend easier. A36 can be flame hardened but has not got a high enough carbon content for the usual quenching and tempering.

Low carbon steel (or "mild carbon steel" or "plain carbon steel") refers to carbon steels that have up to 0.30% carbon content. This is, by far, the most common type of steel on the metals market. There are a few reasons for this. For starters, low carbon steel is relatively inexpensive.

A: If they are talking about sheet and plate, chances are they are referring to grade 250 mild steel sheet and plate. While there are other grades of sheet and plate (200, 350 and 450 grade), most steel and plate used in structural, tank or general fabrication work uses grade 250 steel.
